The Mortifying Way I Learned to Eat More at Breakfast
We’ve all had those “lesson learned the hard way” moments — and mine happened during my first college internship, at Intel. It’s the story that taught me why a healthy breakfast is non-negotiable for steady energy, focus, and well-being. (see the IG reel here)
The Embarrassing Story That Changed My Mornings
I was a junior in college, heading off to my first day in the clean room at Intel — excited, nervous, and determined to impress. My breakfast that morning? A simple bowl of Raisin Bran. Quick, easy, and (so I thought) healthy.
I suited up for work in the clean room — full gear from head to toe; it took me 20 minutes to get it right. After about half an hour in the clean room, I started to feel hot, and faint. I told my manager and she ensured me everyone gets nervous and overwhelmed their first day… within ten more minutes, I passed out.
Right there, in the clean room (it met the highest standard at the time- nothing from the outside could enter).
Operations stopped. People came running. A nurse from outside clean room (who was not suited up) had to wheel me out — and yes, it was every bit as mortifying as it sounds.
What Happens When You Don’t Eat Enough Breakfast
The nurse checked my blood sugar — and it was so low it looked like I hadn’t eaten in days!
I was given an organce juice and a Snickers bar.
That’s when I was told: cereal alone doesn’t cut it— especially if you’re active or under stress.
When you eat a high-carb breakfast without enough protein or fat, your blood sugar spikes and then crashes — leaving you lightheaded, hungry, and foggy (or in my case, flat on the floor).
Breakfast is your body’s first fuel of the day. When you skip it or eat too little, your energy, mood, and focus suffer.
Feeling brain fog? Eating breakfast improves cognitive function.
And scientists have discovered that our circadium rhythms are impacted by light in the mornings- and food. Our metabolism naturally slows as we sleep; then it ramps up once you start eating and digesting.
Why a Balanced Breakfast Matters for Energy and Focus
A healthy, balanced breakfast includes protein, healthy fat, and fiber. These nutrients work together to stabilize blood sugar, keep you full longer, and provide lasting energy — without the crash.
Here’s why each one matters:
Protein (eggs, yogurt, hemp hearts) supports muscle, metabolism, and satiety.
Healthy fats (avocado, nuts, chia seeds) keep hormones balanced and energy steady
Fiber (fruits, greens, oats) aids digestion and helps maintain blood sugar balance.
When you eat this way, you’ll notice clearer thinking, fewer cravings, and more stable energy throughout the morning.
My Go-To Healthy Breakfast Ideas
I make sure my breakfast actually fuels me. Here are some of my go-to options for a balanced morning meal:
Eggs with avocado, hemp hearts and microgreens on sourdough or sprouted toast
Smoothie with protein powder, spinach, berries, and hemp hearts
Greek yogurt with nuts, seeds and fruit for protein and natural sweetness
Overnight or cooked oats with chia seeds, almond butter, nuts and berries
You don’t need a gourmet spread — just a few simple ingredients that give your body the nutrients it needs to start strong.
The Takeaway: Don’t Learn the Hard Way
If you take one thing from this story, let it be this: Brekfast Fuels Your Morning!
Your first meal sets the tone for your blood sugar, energy, and focus all day long.
Trust me — it’s far better to start your morning with real food than to learn the lesson (and the embarrassment) the way I did.
