Back to School, Back to You
An Autumn Reset for Moms
Back-to-school means setting a new routine for the new school year. For my household, fall feels more like the start of a new year than January. Now’s the time to re-evaluate: what do I need right now? What will help me feel stronger, more energized, and/or more grounded this season?
The Power of a Set Drop-Off Time
When you know exactly when your morning begins, you can plan with intention. That predictability is powerful—it allows you to build in the habits that nourish your body and mind. Whether that’s:
Planning meals ahead of time so healthy options are ready when you need them.
Scheduling workouts into your day (and actually sticking with them).
Batching errands so you’re not crisscrossing town at random.
Instead of feeling like your calendar is controlling you, a fixed school routine can help you take the reins back.
Maximize the “Wait Time”
One of the best-kept secrets of seasoned moms is knowing how to use the in-between moments. When my kids were very young, I would stay at their sports practice or activity so they could wave every few minutes- but as they got older, I would sometimes leave to run errands.
Your kids’ sports practice, ballet lesson, or swim class isn’t just their time—it can be yours, too.
Workout While They Do: Check the map ahead of time—Many soccer fields have walking loops or even outdoor workout stations—perfect for a quick walk, jog, or HIIT session while practice is underway.
Bring a resistance band or yoga mat in your trunk. Ten minutes of strength moves or stretching while you wait can do wonders.
Read that Novel: If you’ve been meaning to join a book club, or just start that novel you bought last year- keep it in the car and read it while your child is at activities, or in waiting rooms (showing yourself, and others- that we don’t need to be on our phones all the time!)
Errand Smart: Keep a cooler with ice packs in your car. While your child is at practice, you can knock out grocery shopping and still keep food fresh (I often run out to Costco and this trick works wonders- especially in the hot So Cal sun)
These little tweaks reduce the amount of time you spend driving back and forth—and give you back hours each week.
Back to School Shopping… for YOU
We spend so much energy making sure our kids have the right shoes for PE, a comfortable backpack, and the sustainable lunch boxes that won’t leak.
But what about you? This season, make a short list of what you need to feel strong, supported, and energized:
A pair of comfortable, well- fitting walking or running shoes that actually make you want to move. And if you’ve never gone to a running store to get an assessment for the right type of fit for you- it’s time. Do it.
A sports bra that fits and feels comfortable (& throw out the stretched out, old ones!)
A few easy, healthy staples to stock your fridge and pantry so you have go-to meals at your fingertips (nuts, seeds, fruits, chopped vegetables, nut butter, hummus, whole wheat or seed crackers, olives, Greek yogurt).
When you take care of yourself, you show up with more energy, patience, and presence in your own life- and for your family.
Back to You is Better for Everyone
This year, as you help your kids put their best foot forward, make sure you’re doing the same. With a little planning and some intentional choices, you’ll find that “back to school” can also be the perfect time to get “back to you.”
